HARTZ Search invites you to explore an excellent opportunity with our client, Main Line Health in Radnor, PA, for the organization’s new MEDICAL DIRECTOR, ORTHOPEDICS. Our client, Main Line HealthCare (MLHC) is seeking an accomplished, visionary orthopedic surgeon to serve as our Medical Director of Orthopedic Surgery. This is an exceptional opportunity for a respected physician leader to drive clinical excellence, operational performance, and strategic growth across one of the region's premier orthopedic service lines while maintaining active clinical practice. As Medical Director, you will collaborate with executive leadership, physicians, hospital operations, and multidisciplinary teams to advance quality outcomes, improve access to care, and expand innovative orthopedic programs that enhance the patient experience. The Medical Director of Orthopedics provides clinical leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight for orthopedic service lines, ensuring high-quality patient care and regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities include managing orthopedic surgeons and staff, developing clinical protocols, driving growth, and mentoring medical professionals. This position will implement a strategic vision around quality, efficiency, and the continued growth of the new Orthopedic Services Department. The ideal candidate will also be a mentor to those in the department and residency program. The role involves collaboration with executives, active practice, some administrative work, and has a strong emphasis on strategy and will report to the System Chief Medical Officer. This is a dual administrative and clinical role, offering the opportunity to provide strategic leadership while maintaining an active orthopedic surgery practice within Main Line Health.
Position Summary:
As the clinical and administrative leader for Orthopedic Surgery, you will:
Lead the strategic direction and growth of the orthopedic service line
Establish and promote evidence-based clinical pathways, quality standards, and patient safety initiatives
Partner with surgical operations to improve OR utilization, efficiency, throughput, and operational performance
Oversee physician quality programs, peer review, M&M conferences, and performance improvement initiatives
Recruit, mentor, and develop orthopedic surgeons and advanced practice providers
Collaborate with executive leadership on technology adoption, capital planning, and service line expansion
Support resident, fellow, and APP education while encouraging research and academic engagement
Foster a culture of physician engagement, accountability, collaboration, and innovation throughout the department.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership: Guiding orthopedic teams, including surgeons and staff, to ensure standard-of-care, safety, productivity, and high-quality patient outcomes.
Strategic Growth: Expanding orthopedic services, integrating new technologies, and managing service line performance.
Operational Management: Ensuring compliance with state/federal regulations, improving workflow efficiency, and managing budgets.
Staff Development: Providing mentorship, performance feedback, and participating in the recruitment of medical staff.
Quality Improvement: Monitoring patient care metrics to reduce errors and improve patient/provider satisfaction.
Collaborative Care: Fostering a multidisciplinary team approach to care
Qualifications and Skills
Education: Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).
Experience: Strong experience as a practicing orthopedic surgeon, with leadership experience in a hospital or group practice setting.
Skills: Demonstrated leadership, strategic planning, communication, and budgetary knowledge.
Licensure: Active state medical license and board certification in orthopedic surgery
